Champix Suicidal Side Effects – More data on the suicidal side effects of Champix the stop smoking drug indicates it should only be used as a last resort pictures.
Champix has been linked to suicidal thoughts along with attempted suicide, insomnia and depression according to a new study done by Professor Curt Furberg from Wake Forest University in North Carolina reported in PLoS ONE .
Furberg, a professor in Public Health Science, studied data on Champix users from 1998 and 2010. Over 90 percent of the reports included indications of depression and/or suicidal behavior, including actual suicides potentially linked to the drug. Champix results are alarming when compared with 7 per cent for the drug Zyban, 3 per cent for nicotine patches, gums and other nicotine replacement products.
Champix, which contains the active ingredient varenicline, relieves craving and withdrawal symptoms as well as removing the satisfaction gained from cigarettes. The drug is prescribed to be taken twice a day for 12 weeks. Champix was first linked to a suicide back in 2007 and the drug maker, Pfizer, was asked by the US Food and Drug Administration to submit any data on cases where users have described suicidal thoughts.
Professor Furberg now suggests that based on the recent study the “risks outweigh the benefits.” In addition he suggests, “Champix should be the last resort. You should counsel people to quit and if you need medication use nicotine replacement or Zyban. If you must prescribe Champix, keep track of the person’s mental status.”
