The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William UNICEF effort will include The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark, with whom they will work at UNICEF’s emergency supply center in Copenhagen. Both of the royal couples will receive an update from UNICEF personnel about the current situation in East Africa followed by a an overview of the supply center operations, after which they have volunteered to pack relief boxes.

Duchess Catherine and Prince William have both travelled in Africa and are responding to UNICEF’s request for help after famine was declared in Somalia following the country’s worst drought in 50 years. African charity needs are nothing new to Prince William. He has been very involved over the years in supporting Prince Harry’s South African Sentebale charity and Tusk Trust, a UK-based African conservation charity.

Contrary to rumors, this UNICEF effort by the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince is not an attempt by Catherine to make a formal declaration of patronage. Instead, according to a royal source, “The couple are seeking to use their joint profile to focus global attention on the terrible situation in East Africa and help push the issue up the international agenda.”

The Duchess and Prince teaming with UNICEF will be a welcome addition to relief efforts which are now trying to reach 13 million people, half of which are children. Thousands of children have died already and UNICEF estimates 320,000 more children will starve to death without immediate assistance.
